Restoring cellular energy.
Mitochondria sit at the centre of ageing, neurodegeneration and metabolic disease. They can also move between cells.
Why mitochondria
They generate the energy every cell runs on. Mitochondrial dysfunction appears across ageing, neurodegeneration, metabolic disease and inflammatory fatigue, which makes it one of the few mechanisms broad enough to matter and specific enough to target.
Intercellular transfer
Mitochondria move between cells, including through thin membrane connections between them. Our founding scientific team published evidence of this transfer from human neural stem cells into neighbouring astrocytes, and of the transcriptional changes it produces in the recipient cell.
Transplantation
Isolated healthy mitochondria can be introduced into recipient cells. What follows in the recipient, in gene expression and in proliferation, is an active research question and one we are positioned to ask in human organoid tissue rather than in cell culture alone.
What we do not claim
Mitochondrial augmentation as a therapy is early. We are working on the mechanism and the model system. Anyone claiming a treatment today is ahead of the evidence.
Intercellular mitochondrial transfer is observed and published, including work by our founding team.
